Being on site -- Old vs. Young

There is an interesting and useful part of the studio course this semester, which is site visiting. Why do I say so? Because I really like investigating different sites and observing the activities and people there. Every site has its own features and culture. I feel comfortable when I get to know the difference from site to site. Fortunately, the places of the sites are all in the villages of Wenzhou. We visit one village per week and learn from that village. This week we went to Xianbei village, which is near our school. There is a river that goes through the village, and the villagers on both sides live on this river for hundreds of years.

Satellite Map

When I was visiting the village, I found a very lively place. There are many people playing chess, chatting, playing majiang there, and so on, especially old people. Then I noticed that it is the culture hall of the village. All of the people of the village gather here to communicate with each other. There were two classmates with me, and when we were there, we felt tired and wanted to sit for a while. During that time, I also noticed two old men were sitting on the benches and doing nothing, just silently observing everything in front of them, including we three strangers.

Old People in the Village

Compared with my classmates, these two young people, the two sides formed a stark contrast. My friends are sitting in slutty posture, doing things that are not part of the culture of the village in the cultural hall of the village. This picture reminds me not only of the contrast between the old and the young but also of the age of information technology and the traditional old society.

Old people have experienced so much in their lives that when they get old they just want to be happy every day. They are not so concerned about the development of the present society. For them, health and happiness for themselves and their families are everything in their lives. They may wonder about the behavior of people and things around them, but they don't criticize or ask questions. Silence and quietness are their impression and attitude to the society.

Two handsome boys

Our generation can be considered the first beneficiaries of the information age. It is funny that some people can even skip meals for a day but he can't go a day without checking his phone. The Internet provides us with endless convenience, but it also binds us to these electronic products. Time is no longer our own, and thoughts are no longer our own. Cultural auditorium, a village the purest place, here shows the village simple folk customs, worship the villagers' faith, is the villagers' spiritual sustenance. There is a lot of public space or open space in the village, and the reason why these elderly people choose this place over other places is because it means so much to them.

Maybe sometimes we really need to try to perceive the world in an old person's way, maybe we'll get a broader perspective, maybe we'll figure out something we haven't figured out in a long time.

Villa Farnese

Located in the Trastevere Mountains of Rome, Italy, Villa Farnese is one of the architectural masterpieces of the Renaissance. Originally commissioned by the aristocratic family Alessandro Farnese, it was sold to the Chigi family and is now a museum. Villa Farnese, Italy, 1511      Villa Farnese was designed and built by a number of architects including Raphael and Baldassarre Peruzzi. Built in the early 16th century, the villa is one of the architectural masterpieces of the Renaissance. The graphic design of the villa is a pentagon, which was very unique at that time, and this is what I am most interested in about this building.  The pentagonal plan makes the interior layout of the villa very symmetrical and harmonious. Villa Farnese Plan( Drawn by Alex)      The facade of the house is made of grey and white stones and bricks. The facade is decorated with many exquisite carvings and patterns, which are elegant, delicate and solemn. During the construction of the villa, the most advanc

A Conversation with a Craftman--Ou Sculpture

Ou Sculpture is a kind of traditional plastic art in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, and is also one of the national intangible cultural heritage. This week I found a craftswoman who is specialized in making Ou Sculpture. She has been in this profession for more than ten years. I chose Ou Sculpture because I once took the Ou Sculpture course for one semester. I have experienced this craft in person, so I know the charm of this craft. Ou Sculpture Painting Mindmap      There are several different focuses in this mindmap. Like the context of Ou sculpture, the making process of an Ou sculpture work, the main contents of Ou Sculpture work, and the material of Ou Sculpture. In this part, I mainly want to show how the material of Ou Sculpture, oil mud, is made. The material of oil mud is Ou soil, which is local soil. The first step is to blind the Ou soil, plaster, white cement, and water. Then stir them well and let them dry in the sun. After that, add some oil to the wet mud. Finally, use a ca

Visit to a Factory

Factory is a very important facility in a city. Factories produce materials for the construction of cities and sometimes ship them to other cities or export them. There are many different types of factories, some making building materials, some making daily necessities, and even some processing food. This week we focused on factories that deal with building materials and learned how the assembly lines that make steel pipes work. Photo of a Factory After the observation of the production line and interview with the workers, we got to know the production process of the steel pipe. Firstly, they transport this kind of rolls of steel from a steel mill in Shanghai. A Roll of Steel Then the steel plate is then squeezed by rolls of different sizes to bend into a round tube as it moves through the tracks. Shaping Tool Next, the steel pipe being bent into a round tube passes through an electric welding shop, where the edges of the steel plates are welded together. Electric Welding Shop After be
